Severe Thunderstorms

Anyone in Central and/or Eastern Oregon knows that Sunday afternoon and evening...severe thunderstorms hit the area. Large hail fell in several areas. Winds and heavy rain pounded these areas. A NWS Storm Spotter reported a funnel cloud in the Umatilla County area. For more information on this storm, visit www.wrh.noaa.gov/pdt and click on NW OR & SW WA in the menu on the left.

On This Day, May 13, In 1981, A Tornado 450 Yards In Width Destroyed Ninety Percent Of Emberson, Texas. People Did Not See A Tornado, But Rather A Wall Of Debris. Homes Were Leveled, A Man In A Bathtub Was Hurled A Quarter Of A Mile, And A 1500 Pound Recreational Vehicle Was Hurled 500 Yards. On This Day, May 11, In 1970, A Very Powerful Tornado Struck The City Of Lubbock, Texas Killing 26 Persons, Injuring More Than 500 Others, And Causing 135 Million Dollars Damage. It Was The Most Destructive Tornado Of Record Up Until That Time, And Came On The 17th Anniversary Of The Twister Which Struck Waco Texas Killing 114 Persons. Totals Ranged Up To 12 Inches At Marquette, Michigan, With Eight Inches Reported At Muskego And Hartford, Wisconsin. The Heavy Wet Snow And Winds Gusting To 35 Mph Damaged Or Destroyed Thousands Of Trees And Downed Numerous Power Lines.
